EXPERTISE. GB is an experimental physicist with a long-standing research activity in linear, nonlinear and

ultrafast optical spectroscopy in condensed matter.

 

RESEARCH FIELDS

·         ORGANIC SEMICONDUCTORS AND NANOSTRUCTURES. Host-guest crystals; molecular semiconductors

(oligothiophenes, oligophenylenes and organolanthanides); Self-assembled nanofibers (oligothiophenes

and oligophenylenes) (1995-). Investigated physical phenomena: excited-state properties, excited-state

relaxation, inter-molecular interaction, energy transfer, NIR-light emission, optical gain, light amplification

and random lasing.

·         COLLOIDAL SEMICONDUCTOR NANOCRYSTALS. CdS/CdSe core/shell nanocrystals; NIR-nanocrystals:

PbS, PbSe, (2008-); Non-toxic nanocrystals: Bi2S3, Cu2S and Fe2S (2012-). Investigated physical

phenomena: excited-state properties, multi-exciton states, charged-states, Auger processes, light

emission, optical gain and light amplification, photocurrent ad photovoltaic response.

·         LOW DIMENSIONAL INORGANIC SEMICONDUCTORS. GaAs/GaAlAs Quantum wells and semiconductor

microcavities (1986-2002). Investigated physical phenomena: optical nonlinearities near the optical gap:

optical gain, band gap renormalization, four-wave-mixing and coherent exciton-photon dynamics.

  • Nanomateriali eco-compatibili per celle fotovoltaiche a stato solido di nuova generazione (2012-2015), within the regional  programme -Promozione della ricerca scientifica e dell’innovazione tecnologica in Sardegna. GB is the scientist-in-charge of the project.

  • Supramolecular nanostrucutured organic/inorganic hybrid systems”, within the European programme  FP6 “Marie Curie Research Training Network” 2007-20010.  GB is the national scientist-in-charge of the project.
  • “Molecular organic semiconductors for blue lasers” within MIUR-Italy-Austria bilateral project , 2004. GB was the  italian project leader
  • “Synthesis of novel organic materials and supramolecular architectures for high efficiency optoelectronic and photonics systems”, within  MIUR-FIRB project (2006-2009),  GB is the scientist-in-charge at the University of Cagliari.
  • “Laboratorio di misure spettroscopiche, di trasporto e magnetiche in materiali sottoposti a pressioni estreme",  within the  Programma Operativo Nazionale  (PON), 2003. GB was the  project leader.
  • “Laboratorio Interdisciplinare di Microscopie e Nanoscopie: proprietà elettroniche, ottiche, composizionali e strutturali di dispositivi e materiali naturali e di sintesi.”, within the  Programma Operativo Nazionale  (PON), 2003. GB is member of the scientific board.
