Mission
statement
SLACS
is devoted to performing
simulations based on quantum and statistical mechanics, and bearing on
the
understanding and design of systems and processes relevant to several
fields of
materials science, such as micro and optoelectronic, biomaterials, drug
design,
superconductivity, structural materials, and the interpretation of
experiments
thereupon. Vital links exist with experimental activities and
high-performance
computing developments.
SLACS is currently (as of Jan 2006) a research unit (commessa) of the National Research Council (CNR) in the Centro di Responsabilita' di Ricerca INFM. As such it is strongly coupled to the Democritos center in Trieste. With the latter and with the TASC Laboratory in Trieste, SLACS is due to form (as of this date) a new CNR research insitute named Officina dei Materiali (the Materials Workshop or Atelier, approximately).
The research group centered on SLACS has also obtained recently a major piece of funding to establish a scientific computing facility at its own location in Cagliari, establishing it as one of the major players in computational physics in Italy .
